Malawi’s music industry is abuzz with anticipation as Reggae Dancehall artist King Chambiecco prepares to release his latest single, Masankho, a politically conscious track expected to stir national conversation ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, King Chambiecco said the inspiration behind Masankho came from a desire to reflect on the nation’s political landscape as it enters another election cycle.

“I just felt like addressing some issues about politicians as we draw closer to the elections. I might trigger someone’s mindset with the message I put in the song,” he said.

Masankho, which means “elections” in Chichewa serves as a gentle reminder of the trends and promises that often accompany election periods in Malawi. The artist said the song aims to leave a lasting impression on listeners, sparking reflection rather than controversy.

“I would just love to plant something in their minds nothing more. It’s a neutral song and I just put it the way I wanted to voice out,” he said.

The single blends Reggae and Dancehall sounds, genres King Chambiecco believes are deeply embedded in Malawi’s cultural identity.

“Malawi is a Reggae country. I believe the message and the sound will connect with the people,” he added.

Although Chambiecco remained tight-lipped on the song’s exact message, his intent is clear; to encourage Malawians to think critically about the electoral process and the role of political leaders.

Political analyst Wonderful Mkhutche weighed in on the song’s potential influence, saying that such artistic expressions can carry significant political weight.

“The song has the potential to remind Malawians that elections are about them. They are to make choices that will either make or break this country,” Mkhutche said.

He further emphasized the broader role music can play in shaping public opinion and behavior during election seasons.

“Songs do change people’s minds about voting and also their choices. Music is a huge influence in most people’s minds,” he explained.

He also highlighted the unique responsibility that artists like King Chambiecco carry in the national dialogue.

“Artists have a wide fan base that is ready to listen to them. This opportunity needs to be used by artists to communicate social-building messages, including that of elections,” he added.

Masankho is set to be released in the coming week and will be available for streaming and download on all major digital platforms.

As the country edges closer to the polls, King Chambiecco and other artists are increasingly being recognized not just as entertainers, but as vital voices in Malawi’s democratic conversation.
