Residents of Lilongwe City’s Bwaila Constituency, calling themselves Concerned Citizens, have announced plans to hold a peaceful demonstration Wednesday, February 11, 2026, over delays in announcing the constituency’s parliamentary election results.
In a letter dated February 6, 2026, addressed to the Lilongwe district commissioner and copied to the Malawi Electoral Commission and the Malawi Police Service, the group said it would proceed with the planned protest.
Concerned Citizens Chairperson Tonex Mfulusa Banda told Nthanda Times the decision to demonstrate followed consultations with residents of the constituency, who agreed public action was necessary after previous dialogue efforts failed to yield results.
“We are calling for the immediate release of the Bwaila Constituency member of Parliament election results. The continued delay violates voters’ rights and leaves the constituency without representation in the National Assembly,” Banda said.

The group is also demanding the resignation of Lilongwe City Council Chief Executive Officer McCloud Kadammanja, who served as the council’s returning officer during the last general election. Banda said the demand stems from alleged failures in the handling and examination of void votes.
The protesters further called on the Malawi Electoral Commission to respect the will of voters, saying residents of Bwaila Constituency cannot continue to remain unrepresented in Parliament.
Banda assured authorities the demonstration would be peaceful, saying security arrangements had been made to ensure order during the march.

“We are guaranteeing the Malawi Police Service full cooperation. There will be no violence, no damage to property and no disruption of public order from Chinsapo to the Lilongwe District Council offices and the MEC offices,” Banda said.
Efforts to obtain comment from the Lilongwe district commissioner were unsuccessful, as repeated telephone calls went unanswered.
The Malawi Electoral Commission nullified the Lilongwe City Bwaila Constituency parliamentary results after three of the four candidates lodged a joint complaint over alleged irregularities in the handling of void votes.
The complaint was filed by Hellen Zalira Chabunya of the United Transformation Party, Mike Chimzukira of the Democratic People’s Party and independent candidate Henry Muyaba.
According to unofficial results from the Sept. 16, 2025, general election, Malawi Congress Party candidate Precious Kabambe led with 8,199 votes, followed by Chimzukira with 7,974 votes. Chabunya received 6,387 votes, while Muyaba garnered 3,670 votes.
