An ophthalmic clinical officer at Chikwawa District Hospital, Rex Bwanausi, has won the One World One Family Humanitarian Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to eye health services in southern Malawi.

Bwanausi said the award was a significant recognition of the collective efforts of his colleagues and the support he has received from the district health leadership.

“This is a great recognition, and I would not have achieved it without the support of my colleagues in the department and the Chikwawa Director of Health Services, Dr. Grace Momba,” said Bwanausi.

He said he has been serving at Chikwawa District Hospital since 2006 and joined the ophthalmology department in 2015 after upgrading his qualifications.

“Apart from my work at Chikwawa District Hospital, I have also operated on cataract patients in Nsanje District,” he said.

One World One Family Executive Director for Malawi, Dalitso Mlonya, said Bwanausi was recognised during the One World One Family World Cultural Festival for his selfless service to vulnerable communities.

“For many years, Bwanausi has served as an ophthalmic clinical officer in Chikwawa, where trachoma and cataracts remain the leading causes of blindness. Despite limited resources, he travels long distances, often at his own expense, to deliver sight-saving care to remote villages,” said Mlonya.
