Commissioner Fabiano blames poor civic education and lack of stakeholder involvement for the public’s limited participation in the crucial electoral process.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner, Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano, has expressed concern over the low turnout of voters for the ongoing verification exercise in Dowa District.

Dr. Fabiano made the remarks on Friday morning following visits to several voter registration centers in the district, where he observed a disappointing level of participation.

Speaking to the media after his inspections, Fabiano criticized political parties and some non-governmental organizations for failing to mobilize and sensitize their communities about the importance of the verification process.

“Political parties and concerned stakeholders must play their role in raising awareness in their communities. The current turnout is worrisome. Imagine, since I began my inspection in Dowa, the highest number of people to verify their names at a single center is only 60,” he said.

Fabiano: There hasn’t been enough awareness raising

Some supervisors and concerned citizens attributed the low turnout to inadequate civic education.

Ruckia Bahati, a supervisor at Tchawale Primary School registration center, reported that many people were surprised to see MEC officers at the site.

“Most voters are learning about this exercise only as they pass by. Imagine, since Wednesday—and today being the final day—only 53 people have verified their names,” she said.

Yohane Luzeni, supervisor at Mponera 2 voter registration center, shared a similar concern.

“As of today, only 62 people have verified their names. With today being the last day, it’s clear many won’t get the chance to do so,” he said.

Mary Phiri, a local resident in Mponera 2 expressed frustration over the lack of information.

“I haven’t verified my name. I was surprised to hear about it only yesterday when I returned from a funeral. Many of us weren’t aware of the exercise. They should consider extending the verification period,” she said.

The voter verification exercise, which began on 20th May 2025 is intended to allow registered voters to confirm their details in the system.
