One of the country’s renown human rights advocate Charles Ben Longwe has passed on Wednesday evening in Thyolo district.
Confirming the news, his colleague Bon Kalindo said Longwe has succumbed to a swollen leg at Makwasa hospital in the district.
According to Kalindo, Longwe was taken to the hospital by his family members.
“Comrade Longwe was taken to Makwasa hospital by his relatives. This is not the first time that he went to hospital looking for medical attention because he was earlier treated at Mzuzu Central Hospital but there was no change. His leg was swelling and had developed black spots,” said Kalindo.
Kalindo described him as a fearless human rights advocate and social justice activist who dedicated his life to promoting democracy and fighting for the rights of the oppressed.

“Longwe’s demise has left us helpless. He was one of the great human rights advocates that the country had. We will miss his services. May his soul rest in peace,” mourned Kalindo.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has expressed deep sorrow over his passing, acknowledging the impact he had on the nation.
In an interview with Nthanda Times, UDF Publicity Secretary Dayson Jangiya described Longwe as a bold and patriotic citizen who never shied away from speaking out against injustice.
“We are deeply saddened. Charles Ben Longwe was a freedom fighter, an activist, and a strong voice for human rights. He was fearless—never afraid to stand apart from the crowd and express his views, even when others hesitated. His loss is a great tragedy for the country,” Jangiya said.

He further emphasized Longwe’s impartiality and bravery, stating that his contributions to democracy and human rights will not be forgotten.
“Longwe was a man of conviction. He never sided with the majority just for the sake of it—he always stood for what was right. His passing is a great loss, and we extend our condolences to his grieving family. They should know that they are not alone—the whole nation mourns with them,” he added.
Human rights advocate Edward Kambanje has also expressed deep sorrow over Longwe’s passing, calling him a true patriot and a dedicated activist.
“We have lost him, a fighter, a very patriotic citizen in the name of Charles Ben Longwe. He loved this country and fought for it tirelessly. It is heartbreaking that he is no longer with us,” Kambanje said.
Kambanje highlighted Longwe’s selfless commitment to justice, noting that he never boasted about his contributions but instead focused on helping others.
“He was more concerned about the struggles of ordinary Malawians than his own achievements. His passion for human rights was undeniable, and his absence will be deeply felt in activism, especially here in Malawi.”
In one of his social media voice notes this week, Longwe revealed that he has been seeking for medical attention of his swollen leg
