Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Publicity Secretary, Jessie Kabwila has extended an invitation to all former leaders of the Republic of Malawi to join the Independence Day celebrations on July 6 at Bingu National Stadium, marking the country’s 61st anniversary of independence from the British colonial rule.
Speaking at a press briefing at the MCP Headquarters on Thursday in Lilongwe, Kabwila emphasized the importance of unity during this national celebration.
“Considering that Independence Day is a celebration for the entire nation, we believe that despite our political differences, we should come together to commemorate this special day. It’s not a celebration for MCP alone and we shouldn’t be avoiding each other during this process,” Kabwila added.
She underscored the significance of Independence Day, noting that it commemorates Malawi’s liberation from the British colonial rule on July 6, 1964.

Kabwila added that the 61 years of independence celebration was a time for validation and showcasing the party’s achievements, emphasizing that the MCP has brought sanity to governance.
She, therefore, praised President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s leadership, describing the Malawian leader as a unifying figure who has brought peace and stability to the country.
Deputy Publicity Secretary for MCP, Ken Msonda echoed Kabwila, saying President Chakwera is indeed the leader who brought peace.
Msonda, however, urged parents to accompany their children to the celebrations to ensure a peaceful celebration.
“During the actual Independence Day, we urge parents not to send their children alone but rather accompany them and ensure that there is peace,” he advised.
