Mponda resigns from Silver Strikers amidst Bullets links

Peter Mponda has resigned from his position as head coach of Silver Strikers FC, just four months after signing a two-year contract extension.

The club has announced the resignation in a press release, citing “personal reasons” for Mponda’s departure.

“Silver Strikers Limited wishes to inform its supporters, partners, and all stakeholders that the Club has accepted the resignation of Head Coach Mr. Peter Mponda, effective immediately. Mr. Mponda has tendered his resignation for personal reasons, a decision we deeply respect and understand.,” reads part of the statement.

The 2024 TNM Super League champions have assured their supporters that they are actively working to find a suitable replacement.

“As we navigate this transition, the Club’s management is working swiftly to identify a suitable replacement to ensure the continued success of Silver Strikers on and off the pitch. Further updates regarding the coaching situation will be communicated in due course,” reads the statement.

This development comes amidst strong rumors linking Mponda with a move to FCB Nyasa Bullets.

Mponda’s tenure at Silver Strikers was highly successful, culminating in the club winning the 2024 TNM Championship, their first league title in 11 years. The club expressed its gratitude for Mponda’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.

The resignation fuels speculation that Mponda is set to join Bullets, where he previously served as an assistant coach under Kallisto Pasuwa.

Reports suggest that Bullets have made a substantial offer to Mponda, including a monthly salary exceeding K10 million.

While Mponda has neither confirmed nor denied the Bullets links, his departure from Silver Strikers adds weight to the rumors.

Earlier reports indicated that Bullets had approached Mponda with an initial offer last month, which included a K7 million monthly salary.

Bullets acting chief executive officer Albert Chigoga downplayed the rumors, stating that the club will make an official announcement regarding the head coach position when a decision is made.

“We are now getting used to stories associating the club with particular coaches and players. We have said several times that once the decision regarding the head coach is made, we will make it official. 1 At the moment, let’s enjoy the off-season gossip as it comes,” said Chigoga.

Meanwhile, Pasuwa, whose contract with Bullets is expiring, is reportedly being considered for the vacant Flames (Malawi national team) head coach position.
