A newly released gospel song by St Agnes Choir 1 of Msamba Parish is sparking discussion on suicide prevention in Malawi, drawing support from mental health experts who say faith-based messages can encourage people to seek help.

The song, titled ‘Tisadziphe’, was produced by the outstation choir after several suicide incidents involving men, women, and youths were reported in Malawi and within the parish. The track has been reviewed and approved by Msamba Parish for use during mass.

Parish Priest Fr Patrick Elias Lipenga said the choir felt compelled to act after witnessing growing emotional struggles among parishioners and other Malawians.

“There are several cases of suicide that motivated the choir. Several males were affected, together with women and the youths in Malawi as well as at the parish, and that inspired the question behind the song,” he said.

He added that the message is intended for everyone, not only Catholics.

“This song is really teaching, not only to Catholics. It is encouraging to the whole nation at large. The way the choir sang it is very nice and is helping,” he said.

Mental health expert Prof Chiwoza Bandawe welcomed the initiative, saying the song addresses issues affecting many Malawians, especially young people who face deep feelings of hopelessness and stress.

“Young people often reach a point where they see no purpose in carrying on. Many have stressors such as financial problems, family conflicts, debt, and overwhelming pressure. The bottom line is that many people don’t know how to handle stress, especially men who don’t know that they should talk to someone,” he said.

Bandawe added that music and church messages can be powerful tools for mental health awareness.

“Church initiatives are absolutely important because church gives many people a sense of hope. When churches speak openly about mental health, it encourages people to speak up when they are struggling,” he said, adding that religious leaders need more training to support people dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.

A Lilongwe resident, Gama Innocent, said the song delivers a necessary message, particularly for men who often suffer in silence.

“Mostly it is men who commit suicide because they are afraid of speaking out. This song will help many. Since it is from a church choir, it can teach us to be strong and not commit suicide, especially because the Bible considers suicide a sin,” he said.
