Controversial Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the North, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, is in hot water with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika after dissing a board membership appointment, calling it a “big demotion”.
Sources close to the presidency say Mutharika is furiating, feeling betrayed by Ngwira’s lack of gratitude.
Ngwira, former MP for Mzimba Hora, reportedly complained about the appointment, claiming it was beneath someone of his calibre and status in politics.
The DPP leadership is questioning Ngwira’s priorities, pointing out his minimal contribution to Mutharika’s 2020 election campaign and his tainted CV.

Mutharika has issued a stern warning to Ngwira, reprimanding him for taking him for granted.
“Mutharika gave him a chance to serve, and this is how he repays him?” said a source close to the presidency.
Ngwira’s history doesn’t help – in 2020, he was sentenced to four years for abusing his office, misusing K250,000. He was pardoned in 2022 after faking illness. But the stain remains.
Ngwira’s move may have burned bridges, damaging his reputation and future prospects. His criticism raises questions about his suitability for leadership roles.
The warning from Mutharika serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty within the DPP. As the party navigates its future, Ngwira’s actions may be seen as a test of Mutharika’s leadership and the party’s values. One thing’s clear: in Malawi’s politics, gratitude is not just a virtue, it’s a necessity.
