People’s Development Party (PDP) presidential candidate Kondwani Nankhumwa on Saturday submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), pledging to champion peace and issue-based politics ahead of the September 16 general elections.

The nomination event took place at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, where Nankhumwa, accompanied by his running mate Bertha Mackenzie Ndebele, addressed supporters and MEC officials on the importance of a violence-free electoral process.

“Our party stands for peace and unity because Malawi needs healing and development,” said Nankhumwa during his speech.

The former Minister of Local Government and ex-senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member said PDP would campaign on policies that prioritise integrity, transparency, and service delivery. He described Ndebele, a former legislator for Balaka West, as a dependable leader committed to national progress.

Nankhumwa told the gathering that his alliance with Ndebele is rooted in trust and shared values, and expressed confidence in his party’s chances in the upcoming polls.

He said Malawians are yearning for a new direction and assured them of a leadership that will uphold dignity and fairness if given the mandate.

The PDP leader also took time to commend MEC for its management of the electoral process and urged the commission to maintain neutrality and professionalism.

“Keep serving the country without fear or favour and ignore destructive criticism,” he said, addressing MEC officials.

During the event, MEC Chairperson Justice Dr Annabel Mtalimanja reminded all political contenders to uphold democratic values throughout the campaign period.

“This election is a competition in which only one winner will emerge, but the nation must remain united regardless of outcome,” she said.

She urged candidates to focus on presenting policies that address national development and enhance unity, cautioning against hate speech and misinformation.

MEC is expected to complete receiving nominations from all presidential aspirants by July 30, in preparation for the September 16 general elections.
