National Children’s Commission engages Nsanje District Council

The National Children’s Commission has urged Nsanje District Council to prioritize child rights protection. Commissioner Laika Milanzi emphasized accountability, advocacy, and better services for children, while council officials pledged continued support following a sensitization meeting on the Commission’s mandate.

National Children’s Commission (NCC) has challenged Nsanje District Council and stakeholders to be at the forefront in protecting the rights of children.

Commissioner for NCC Laika Milanzi made the call on Wednesday during District Executive Committee sensitization meeting organized by the Commission to introduce the NCC and its functions.

She said the Commission was instituted to hold all stakeholders accountable to protect children in the country.

“NCC is not there to intimidate or to threaten anyone, but to protect children in all spheres of their lives and regulate how children are being treated in the country. The Commission plays a crucial role in advocating for children’s rights, monitors policies and legislation to ensure that the human rights of children are being promoted and protected,” she said.

Milanzi further said the Commission was also mandated to provide advice to all stakeholders based on the needs and experience of children.

“The Commission is there to lobby for better services and environment for children,” she added,

Director of Human Resources and Administration at Nsanje District Council, Rottina Mlombwa applauded NCC for organizing the sensitization meeting at the council.

She said the move will help duty bearers to be accountable for their actions as they deal with children in their routine activities.

“As a government organization, we will make sure that we continue protecting the rights of children in the district,” added Mlombwa.

The Malawi Government instituted NCC under the National Children’s ACT, number 24 of 2022, to ensure coordination, collaboration and accountability among stakeholders working for the well-being of Children in the country.
