New DEN executive elected in Blantyre, CSEC Pledges Support for Free Primary Education Awareness

A new Blantyre District Education Network executive has been elected to champion quality education, with CSEC pledging strong support for free primary education awareness as Malawi prepares to roll out its free secondary education policy nationwide.

Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) on Tuesday held an election of new executive members for Blantyre District Education Network (DEN) to lead advocacy for quality education systems in the district.

The election was held at Limbe Primary School where CSEC Programmes Officer, Kisa Kumwenda said the coalition has high expectations that the newly elected DEN leadership, expressing hope that it will play a vital role in promoting quality and inclusive education in the district.

 “We believe the new DEN executive will help us reach more communities with the right information, especially on how the free secondary education policy will work. People are very excited after the president announced this development.

‘‘There is still a need for clarity on aspects such as boarding and examination fees,” Kumwenda said

He added that CSEC will continue working hand in hand with the Ministry of Education and local structures like DENs to ensure that all children enjoy their right to education.

The newly elected DEN Chairperson, who also serves as the Executive Director for the Youth Coordinating Agency in Development (YOCADE), Henderson Mhango said the new executive committee will prioritise collaboration in advocating for inclusivity in child education.

 “We will make sure this network remains active and works closely with Ministry of Education and partners to reach every child with quality education opportunities,” he said.

Apart from the Chairperson, the meeting at Limbe Primary School elected Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.

CSEC is an umbrella body comprising civil society organisations that advocate for equitable and quality education for all Malawian children.

The coalition works through DEN, which monitors education systems to ensure quality service delivery, promote accountability, and engage communities to address education challenges.
