According to the 2024 Open Doors report, the number of Malawians studying in the United States increased by 34.6 percent, moving from 373 in the 2022/2023 academic year to 502 in 2023/2024.
A press release from the US Embassy in Lilongwe states this follows a 9.1 percent increase the previous year.
The jump in the numbers for Malawi was higher than the overall increase in Sub-Saharan Africa, whose totals grew by 13 percent in 2023/24.
It further indicates that Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest growth rate among all world regions for the second consecutive year, building on the 18 percent increase in 2022/23.
The press release quotes U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Amy Diaz saying the increase is a sign of the confidence and trust that Malawians have in American education.
“The United States remains the number one destination for students who seek a global education. The continued expansion of international students coming to the United States points to the strength of American universities and their reputations as global centers of innovation, knowledge, and leadership worldwide,”.
In 2023/2024, America welcomed an all-time high of 1.12 million international students coming from more than 210 countries and places of origin.
