Police in Kawale have rescued a 46-year-old man from an angry mob after he was allegedly caught defiling a 12-year-old girl in Kaliyeka Township, one of the suburbs under the Kawale policing area.

Kawale Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Precious Mabvuto Phiri, confirmed the incident, identifying the suspect as Geoffrey Kamanga from Luwerezi Village, Traditional Authority Mabulabo in Mzimba District.

According to Phiri, the incident happened on Thursday, November 6, 2025, when community members became suspicious after noticing Kamanga’s unexpected visit to the girl’s home in the absence of her parents.

“Upon storming the house, the neighbors found the suspect in the act with the minor. This angered the community members, who attempted to take the law into their own hands,” said Phiri.

Alerted by well-wishers, the Kawale Police Rapid Response Patrol Team swiftly responded and managed to rescue the suspect from the enraged villagers.

Kamanga is currently in police custody and will appear in court soon to answer a charge of defilement, which contravenes Section 138 of the Penal Code.

Sub Inspector Phiri has since warned members of the public against engaging in mob justice, emphasizing that such actions obstruct investigations and violate the laws of the country.
