Pres. Mutharika renames Paul Kagame road to honour John Chilembwe

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, exercising powers conferred on him under Section 89 (1)(c) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, as read with Section 5, has conferred honours on national hero John Chilembwe by renaming Paul Kagame Road in Lilongwe to John Chilembwe Road.

According to a press statement signed by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Adack K. Saidi, the directive took effect on January 12, 2026.

“The Ministry of Transport and Public Infrastructure has been directed to erect new road signs by January 16, 2026,” reads the statement.

John Chilembwe is a prominent figure in Malawi’s history, and the renaming of the road stands as a testament to his enduring contribution to the country’s liberation struggle and national identity.
