President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has disclosed that his government will implement people-centred approach in reviving the Malawi and improving the lives of its ordinary citizens.

Delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in the National Assembly in Lilongwe on Friday, President Mutharika highlighted the challenges facing Malawi, including a severe economic crisis, food insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure.

President Mutharika emphasized his government’s commitment to delivering a people-centered development agenda, prioritizing the needs of Malawians and promoting economic growth and prosperity.

He said his administration will implement critical and tangible measures to stabilize the economy, including reducing inflation from 28.7% in September 2025 to less than 21% in 2026, and increasing economic growth from 2.7% to 3.8% in 2026 and 4.9% in 2027.

To achieve this, Mutharika stated, the government will implement austerity measures, review foreign exchange regulations, and increase gold purchases.

Mutharika: My government will continue implementing austerity measures

On agriculture and food security, President Mutharika acknowledged that Malawi faced a serious food crisis when he took office, but the government has since bought maize and distributed it to those in need, reducing prices from MK100,000 to between MK38,000 and MK55,000 per 50kg bag.

“The government will also make affordable fertilizer available to farmers and facilitate fertilizer production in the country,” he said.

Turning to infrastructure development, the Malawi President announced plans to improve infrastructure, including rehabilitating roads, such as the M1 Road from Chitipa to Nsanje, expanding the Malawi Airlines fleet from three to ten aircraft, rehabilitating the Marka-Bangula rail line and constructing Likoma Port and upgrading Chipoka Port

Mutharika also disclosed that his government has already introduced free secondary education in public schools as one way of improving access to education for all.
