Project enrolls 4,000 school children with disabilities

The Department of Education under CCAP Synod of Livingstonia has made a headway in promoting enrollment of learners with various disabilities in primary schools in Nkhata Bay District.

The Project Manager responsible for inclusive education in the Synod’s Education Department, Atupele Nampota, made the remarks Wednesday during a media training on the Inclusive Education Project which seeks to promote equal access to education in the district.

“Our target was to enroll 2,000 learners with disabilities in schools in the 13 education zones where we have been working in this district from March 2018, but the number has doubled to 4,000, which is a good development,” Nampota said.

She attributed the achievement to collaborative efforts among different stakeholders, including community structures which formulated by-laws aimed at promoting inclusive education.

Nampota then advised Nkhata Bay based journalists to continue disseminating information about the project for the benefit of a wider community in as far as the project was concerned.

Nampota speaking to the media

“Through the training, we would like you to have full knowledge on our project so that they can reach to people with the right messages,” said Nampota.

District Information Officer for Nkhata Bay, Chisomo Kambandanga, described the training as a welcome development to the media.

He said the initiative has bridged the knowledge gap that reporters had on the project which is currently underway.

“There is need for the media to be considered as stakeholders in implementation of various projects taking place in the district for them come up with stories and right messages which can bear positive impact on the projects,” said Kambandanga.

He therefore urged all stakeholders working in the district to emulate the gesture as demonstrated by the Synod.

The project, which focuses on capacity building through community empowerment, is being funded by the Scottish Government and was launched in 2018 and expected to end in 2024.
