Senior Health Surveillance Assistant at Biwi Health Center, Lawrence Dzoole, has emphasized the importance of proper diaper disposal, saying it protects both the health of children under five and the environment.
Dzoole made the remarks during a session on Friday aimed at teaching mothers how to safely and responsibly manage used diapers.

He warned that incorrect diaper disposal can have detrimental effects on infants’ health, potentially causing diarrhoea and infections, while also posing environmental risks.
“Careless disposal of diapers could lead to major health issues and hinder the growth and development of young children while worsening environmental deterioration,” Dzoole said.

He explained that discarding diapers in stagnant water or on open land contributes to pollution, endangers wildlife, and disrupts ecosystems.

“It is crucial to educate caregivers about responsible disposal methods to ensure a healthier future for both children and the planet,” he stated.
Environment expert Godfrey Mfiti supported Dzoole’s advocacy, highlighting that diapers can take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills.
“The disposal process for diapers significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. Using eco-friendly options is crucial, as diapers made from sustainable materials can help lessen these adverse environmental effects,” Mfiti said.
He urged manufacturers to produce biodegradable diapers to promote a cleaner and more sustainable ecological future.
One participant, Trizer Shaban, described the session as an eye-opener.
“Thanks to this guidance, we are now committed to enhancing health outcomes for infants and promoting a cleaner, more hygienic environment for the community,” she said.
