Road accident kills Kabaza operator, injures two passengers in Ndirande

A Kabaza rider died and two passengers were injured in a road accident on Sunday along the old Chileka road in Ndirande. Police say the motorcycle was hit by a minibus and later collided with another vehicle.

Police in Ndirande, Blantyre, have confirmed the death of a motorcycle (locally called Kabaza) operator following an accident which took place on Sunday along old Chileka road.

Ndirande Police Station Public Relations Officer Chibisa Mulimbika told Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Monday that Yohane Lazaro, who carried two passengers, was riding an unregistered motorcycle from the direction of Magalasi roundabout to Machinjiri roundabout and was hit by a Toyota Hiace minibus.

“As he tried to switch from the outer lane and into the inner lane at Denis, the Kabaza Operator was hit by the minibus, which made him run into another vehicle, registration number BW 7079 Latio Saloon, which was driving towards the same direction. He didn’t stop but proceeded towards Machinjiri roundabout, where he hit another unregistered motorcycle,” Mulimbika said.

Mulimbika added that the passengers, Stain Liwonde, aged 58, sustained a fracture on his left leg and arm, while Felix Njaye, aged 56, suffered a fracture in his left arm and

“Police rushed them to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where they are receiving treatment, while the rider was pronounced dead upon arrival due to internal bleeding caused by the accident,” he said.

He also disclosed that following the accident, the motorcycle of the deceased had its head lamp and leg protectors damaged while the minibus, registration number TO 6623, which was driven by Peterson Jeke, aged 28, had its windshield, offside view mirror and front part damaged.

The deceased, 35, hailed from Mtalanje Village, Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota District.
