SADC Chairperson urges peaceful elections in Seychelles

As the Republic of Seychelles prepares for the second round of presidential elections, Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson and Malawi President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has called for peace and stability during the electoral process.

In a statement released on the eve of the elections, Mutharika urged all Seychellois nationals eligible to vote to turn out in large numbers, exercise their democratic right, and contribute to the development and prosperity of their country.

“Let us maintain the peace and stability that has been the hallmark of Seychelles democracy. I call upon all political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint, remain calm, respect the will of the people and act responsibly during this period,” reads the statement in part.

The SADC Chairperson also commended the government of Seychelles for inviting SADC to deploy an Electoral Observation Mission ( SEOM) to observe the country’s pre-election phase, polling day and post-election processes.

The SEOM will ensure that the elections are conducted in accordance with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, which promote regular, free, fair, transparent, credible, and peaceful democratic processes.

Mutharika concluded by wishing the people of Seychelles successful and peaceful elections and urged them to continue enjoying the peace, stability, and tranquillity that has characterized their country.
