Ekwendeni, Kamuzu Barracks FC in goalless league opener

Ekwendeni Hammers and Kamuzu Barracks Football Clubs have kicked off their 2023/24 Sulom-Super League campaigns with a goalless draw in a match played on Sunday at Mzuzu Stadium.

The game which was the first one this season for both teams was played at a muddy Mzuzu Stadium with only a handful of supporters in the stands.

Ekwendeni Hammers dominated much of the game but they failed to put the ball in the back of the net after 90 plus added minutes of play at their homeground Mzuzu Stadium.

Blessings Singini of Ekwendeni Hammers was a marvel to watch as he kept tormenting the Kamuzu Barracks defence and at the end of the match he was awarded the Farmers Player of the Match.

The visitors Kamuzu Barracks FC, who have just secured a K10 million sponsorship deal with Masters Bakery, looked threatening at times to break the deadlock through their attacker Kelvin Hanganda but it was not his day.

Speaking in an interview after the game, Coach for Ekwendeni Hammers Elias Chirambo said they could have won the game but the weather disrupted their game plan.

“We kept 70 percent of ball possession but we also missed several chances which could have won us the game. But judging from our performance today, I am sure that at the end of the season, we will finish on a good position,” Chirambo said.

Speaking in a separate interview, Alick Chirwa also blamed the rain and Mzuzu Stadium for his side’s failure to win the game.

“The problem with this pitch is that when it rains, it becomes very muddy making our style of play difficult, however, we have won a point playing away and our mission is to finish as champions so we will get back to training and prepare for our next encounter,” Chirwa said.

The match between Ekwendeni Hammers and Kamuzu Barracks FC grossed K 134,400.00 with both teams going away with K17,250.
