Three convicts get additional 12-years IHL for robbery

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lilongwe on 7th June 2023, convicted and sentenced Dan William, 19, Chipiliro Anderson, 19, and Aphex Sungani, 18, to 12-years imprisonment with hard labour each for committing robbery.

The three are already serving a 7-year jail term each for similar offenses which they committed in 2022 at Interchange.

The court heard through prosecutor Sergeant Gladson Chimseu that, the accused persons during the month of April 2022 had been terrorizing and committing a series of robberies at the Interchange.

Prosecutor Chimseu added that the convicts also attacked Happy Thengolose who had a breakdown at Area 14 interchange road and robbed her Tecno Pop 4 cellphone.

Appearing in court all convicts pleaded not guilty to the charges prompting the state to parade three witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In mitigation, the convicts asked the court to consider their ages since they are all under 20 years and already serving such that giving them another custodial sentence will ruin their future.

In submission, the state pleaded with the court for a maximum sentence saying the three still have more cases to answer and their behaviors cannot be tolerated by society.

Passing sentences Senior Resident Magistrate Shukurani Kambani concurred with the state.

He, therefore, sentenced each of them to 12 years imprisonment with hard labor as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

William hails from Chiliwiro Village, Traditional Authority Vuso Jere in Ntchisi, Anderson hails from Kambwiri Village, Traditional Authority Malomo in Ntchisi while Sungani hails from Phulusa Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba.
