Voter registration exercise starts on a positive note in  Karonga

Potential voters for the 2025 General Election have started trickling into Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) registration centres to have their names recorded in the electoral register.

According to MEC’s District Elections Officer for Karonga, Elias Nyirenda, registration started in all 157 registration centres at exactly 8:00 am.

“So far, the registration process has started on a good note and we have not received any technical reports of devices failing to capture details of potential voters.

We are working with Constituency Civic Education Officers, Voter Registration Assistants and Road Show Promoters to ensure that people register for them to cast their vote next year,” said Nyirenda.

He further urged stakeholders such as National Initiative for Civic Education Trust (NICET)  and accredited civil society organizations to assist in the people’s mobilization initiative

Registration for the 2025 General Election is being done with the newly adopted voter registration system using Election Management Devices and it will run from October 21 to November 3 in Karonga which is one of the districts in the first phase of the exercise.

Principal Registration Officer for the National Registration Buruae for Karonga, Chikondi Mtunga said that his office deployed 157 Identity Verification Officers to assist people who may have national identity-related challenges for the exercise to be successful registration exercise.

“These officers will be present in all MEC registration centres and Headteachers in 37 Schools will also be distributing National IDs to those who have not yet collected theirs,” said Mtunga.
