Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay Central, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, has appealed to the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture to move in and support completion of construction of a stadium in the district.
In an interview at Parliament Building in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Kaunda said construction of the community stadium is already under way through Constituency Development Fund (CDF) but they are looking for more support to complete the structure.
“The contractor is already on site and we have done almost halfway. We are asking Ministry of Local Government to help us complete the project,” said Kaunda.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, said government will fund construction of the stadium in Nkhata Bay and other districts whenever resources are available.
“The MP for Nkhata Bay Central has been asking this for some time. People of Nkhata Bay deserve a stadium just as other districts. So, we will look for resources and once available we should be able to give such resources for the stadium.
“For Zomba, there is something we are doing already. As I speak, the contractor is on the ground. However, procurement of materials for the final phase delayed,” Banda said.
According to Chimwendo Banda, the stadium in Zomba, with a maximum capacity of 12,000 from the previous 6,000, is being constructed to host international games.
