At least 10 women in Rumphi running as independent candidates and others sponsored by political parties have collected Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) nomination forms to compete for parliamentary and local government positions in September 2025 General Election.

This comes as Oxfam and Women Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) with funding from European Union (EU) have intensified their campaign aimed at promoting interests of political minorities including women, persons with disabilities and the youth.

They have also been engaging aspirants and people in the district to dissuade them from engaging in political violence and seeking handouts from aspirants through road shows and community engagement ahead of the Election.

Mtungambera: I want to improve access to water and healthcare

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) aspirant for the position of councilor for Phoka Ward in Rumphi North Constituency, Clara Mtungambera, said that as a woman she understands the challenges of accessing water and healthcare especially for women who manage homes.

She says she will work hard to address water challenges in areas such as Zombe and also improve road networks by among others constructing bridges to facilitate easy movement of people including pregnant women and goods to enhance trade in her area.

Alliance for Democracy aspirant for Rumphi North, Maggie Dosi, said she has the passion to serve the people of Rumphi North in improving education, healthcare and agricultural productivity.

“I plan to introduce mobile van clinics which will be equipped with medical personnel to help provide healthcare in remote areas with difficulties in accessing healthcare among the many solutions I intend to provide in various sectors,” said Dossi.

Maggie Mhango from Mhuju in Senior Chief Mwahenga said there are a number of women in the district with abilities to advance development and deserve a chance at the ballot.

Currently all four parliamentary and eight local government seats in the district are occupied by men.
