Youth in the country have been urged to stay focused in creating their own job opportunities rather than relying on government assistance.
The call was made on Thursday in Lilongwe by the Production Manager for Greenbelt Greenhouse Limited, Lydia Jailosi, during the second day of this year’s National Youth summit, organised by the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM), where delegates visited different sites to learn from fellow youths who are making strides in different sectors.
Jailosi said that as youth, they should consider venturing into agriculture, as it is marketable and manageable, requiring only a small amount of capital to start something meaningful.
For example, this place has created many job opportunities for young people and we even export our products to other countries. This shows how beneficial agriculture is to our nation and economy,” she said.
She then encouraged the young people to think beyond their careers and be innovative enough as the future in agriculture in this country is promising.

In her remarks, one of the youth participating in the summit, Flora Ngina Mwale, said this is an inspiration because they have learnt a lot from the trip and encouraged other youth to take part in agriculture production.
She stated that the knowledge she has gained from the Greenbelt Greenhouse will help her to develop her own farming business.
The Greenbelt Greenhouse Limited was established in 2019 as a major agricultural project in Malawi and it focuses on intensive vegetable farming using Israeli greenhouse technology, aiming to produce high-quality produce for both local and export markets.
The 2025 National Youth Summit, has brought together about 1,000 young people from across the country.
