Second Vice President Enock Chihana, who is also the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President, has urged people in Rumphi Central Constituency to vote for AFORD’s candidate, Paul Nthambazale Nyirenda, in the forthcoming parliamentary by-election in the constituency.
Chihana was speaking Saturday at Peak Ground in Rumphi Central Constituency after touring some development projects in the constituency.
“Nyirenda’s interest is people’s welfare in the constituency. I know him and I am sure that if you elect him as your Member of Parliament on March 17, he will prioritise your welfare,” said Chihana.

In an interview, Nyirenda said the constituency needs someone with development oriented vision to utilise natural resources in the district for the benefit of the citizenry and he is that person.
“Rumphi has Nyika National Park, Vwaza Game Reserve and several rivers. We need to find ways for people to benefit from these resources and enhance irrigation farming through these abundant water resources. People of Rumphi are not supposed to be food insecure,” said Nyirenda.
Chihana earlier visited Bolero Community Hospital and Bolero Market where he donated money for improvement of sanitation facilities and bags of cement towards completion of a market shelter respectively.
Parliamentary candidates on Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), AFORD, UTM Party and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) tickets, among others, will also contest for the seat.
The by-election follows the appointment of Chihana, who emerged winner during the September 16, 2025 General Elections, as Second Vice President by President Professor Peter Mutharika.
