DoDMA Enhances Disaster Risk Management Reporting for Ntcheu, Salima Journalists

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has underscored the media’s pivotal role in disseminating early warning messages to the public.

DoDMA Principal Information and Public Relations Officer Chipiliro Khamula made the remarks on Tuesday in Salima during a two-day orientation for journalists based in Ntcheu and Salima, focusing on Disaster Risk Management (DRM). 

Khamula said when journalists go beyond reporting disasters, they help in building resilient communities.

“There is a need for us to go beyond reporting on disaster occurrences and give attention to reporting that will greatly contribute to reducing disaster risks and building communities’ resilience to disasters. Early warning messages on looming cyclones, for example, have to be highlighted to save lives and property,” said Khamula.

Disaster Risk Management Officers (DRMOs) for Ntcheu and Salima Districts, Jonathan Kapatsa and Gloria Chinangwa, respectively, called for collaborative efforts and strong relationships between their offices and journalists within their jurisdiction. 

Kapatsa emphasized, “We must work hand in hand with journalists to reduce disaster risks and build resilience in the most vulnerable communities.”

These orientation workshops were made possible through funding from Ntcheu and Salima District Councils, demonstrating the local authorities’ commitment to improving disaster risk management and ensuring the safety of their communities.
