Malawi to secure 150$ million grant from World Bank for GESD 2 project

Malawi is set to receive a $150 million World Bank grant under the GESD 2 project, aimed at boosting local governance, improving service delivery, and advancing digital monitoring systems for real-time tracking of development projects nationwide.

The World Bank Country Manager for Malawi, Faras Raad, has disclosed that the bank will provide $150 million to support the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) 2 project.

Raad revealed this during the meeting with the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development held on Tuesday, at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.

“World Bank remains committed to foster strategic partnership with the government of Malawi to improve service delivery and livelihoods of people and strengthen ongoing development programs across the country “, he added.

He further added that the grant will go a long way in fostering improved coordination between government and development partners.

In his remarks, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri expressed appreciation to World Bank for the partnership with the government of Malawi, noting that this is crucial in fostering various developments for the country.

During the meeting, the Minister also requested the Bank to assist the Ministry with technical and financial support for the development of the dashboard.

“The dashboard will be part of digital solutions we intend to introduce to monitor performance of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects in real time this is crucial for improving service delivery, aligning with the ministry’s mandate”, said Phiri.

He therefore expressed appreciation to the bank, highlighting that the meeting strengthens the collaboration between government and World Bank in accelerating rural development and improving local governance across Malawi.
