Project Coordinator for Youth Initiative for Community Development (YICOD), Reonard Emiliyo, has urged stakeholders to implement initiatives that improve the livelihoods of women and youths across the country.
Emiliyo made the remarks on Monday during a function where 60 goats were distributed to women and youths in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kachere in Dedza District.
He explained that the distribution, which involved giving five goats to each of 12 beneficiaries, aims to empower vulnerable people and help them adapt to climate change. He emphasized the need for communities to embrace both crop and animal farming.
“The project aims at improving livelihoods in communities in this area. We want to empower people economically, and with the effects of climate change, farmers need to adopt diverse farming practices,” said Emiliyo.

He added that the pass-on programme will be closely monitored to ensure it benefits many, including people living with disabilities.
One of the beneficiaries, Lokesi Esimu from Chingwalu Village under T/A Kachere, said the five goats will greatly support her household.
“I appreciate YICOD for considering me in this initiative. I will make sure the goats are well taken care of as they will not only help me but also everyone in our household,” said Esimu.
Another youth beneficiary, 19-year-old Letina Msiska from Tchanga Village, said the goats will provide manure for her fields and encouraged other youths to engage in farming instead of being involved in unproductive activities.
“I appeal to other youths to join farming activities instead of engaging in bad behaviors,” said Msiska.
