Tropical Cyclone Freddy

Ministry of Health through Director of Preventive Health Services. Storn Kabuluzi has said three Tropical Cyclone Freddy (TCF) Camps in Zomba, Machinga and Phalombe have registered cases of scabies.

Chakwera Presidential Charity – a charity arm of President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera – has donated MK120 million and 20 bales of blankets to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) to enable the agency respond effectively to the needs of the Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors.

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has stressed the need for collaboration in reconstructing Malawi, which is healing from the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

The United Nations and humanitarian partners in Malawi have appealed for additional US$70.6 million (approximately MK70.6 billion) to assist 1.1 million people affected by the passage of the Tropical Cyclone Freddy weather system in the Southern Region in March 2023.

The Government of Norway has pledged to provide continued support to survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy in the Southern Region districts of Malawi.

Bwande Partners, a WhatsApp grouping of fans of Bwande Radio Cartoon, on Thursday, 30 March 2023, donated assorted food and non-food items to cyclone Freddy survivors in Mpoto village T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre.

Malawi President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has challenged world leaders to match their words of solidarity with action in helping people affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy with relief assistance.

Governance and human rights advocate Undune Mwakasungula has chastised Mwanza Central lawmaker Nicholas Dausi for uttering ‘irresponsible and unreasonable’ remarks about neighbouring countries, which are involving in search and rescue of survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

Mbidi Evacuation Camp, which is in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwambo in ZOmba, has yet to receive support from the government and its development partners, close to three weeks since Cyclone Freddy hit. 

Presidential candidate for the former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Joseph Mwanamvekha, has advised survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy to take proper care of their children and send them to school once schools open.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councillor for Mlomba Ward in Machinga, Alexander Cosmos, is in police custody over alleged diversion of relief items.
