“We will not be relegated,” vows Nyambose as Songwe Border Utd struggles in debut season

With grit, strategy, and a bit of reinforcement, Nyambose believes Songwe Border United will remain in the Super League beyond this season.

Songwe Border United head coach Christopher Nyambose has assured fans that the team will not face relegation, despite a dismal start to their maiden campaign in Malawi’s top-tier TNM Super League.

After ten games, the border-based outfit has drawn once and lost nine matches, conceding 29 goals and scoring only three.

The team’s latest blow came in the form of a humbling 4-0 defeat to Chitipa United, but Nyambose remains defiant.

“It’s a painful defeat, but we have to blame ourselves. We’re not playing as a team. We give our opponents too much room, and it’s clear that the squad needs an overhaul,” Nyambose admitted.

Nyambose: The squad needs overhaul

Despite the current position at the bottom of the log, the veteran coach insists there is still hope.

“We’re not going down,” he stressed. “We just need to inject two or three players when the transfer window opens. This is not the time to panic—it’s time to act.”

Songwe Border United, based in Karonga District, earned promotion this season and are quickly learning the harsh realities of elite football.

Nyambose, known for his tactical bluntness, says part of the challenge is the lack of mental maturity among his players.

“The players have the physical strength, they have the skill, but upstairs—when it comes to decision-making—they struggle. They depend too much on the technical bench. That must change,” added Nyambose.

He also acknowledged that squad depth is a concern, especially with key players carrying knocks.

“I have six or seven reliable players. But if two or three are injured or off-form, we’re in trouble. We need a strong bench that brings positive impact when changes are made,” he added.

Songwe Border United’s next assignment won’t be any easier—they face Mighty Wanderers, one of the Super League’s title contenders, in a high-stakes encounter on 2 July at Karonga Stadium.

However, Nyambose is optimistic that the team can regroup and deliver a competitive performance.

“We’re not going to make excuses. This is football. We’ll fix what needs fixing and fight to stay in this league,” he said.

Nyambose played a crucial role in helping Chitipa United avoid relegation from the elite league in the 2024 season.
